Twelve Victims a Day

Twelve Victims a DayWhile the debate on the new Highway Code will resume shortly in Parliament, recent statistics from the National Observatory of road traffic accidents show that we are now moving towards a new record of victims. Thus the year 2009 could be even more deadly than previous years. Just during the month of September, 362 people died in traffic accidents in the 16 regions. The number of victims is also an increase of 2.55% over the same period in 2008. The balance of serious injuries has also increased in September from 7.70% to 1,175 victims, while the number of minor injuries has also jumped to 8,274 victims, an increase of 15.30%. In total, the roads have been only 30 days in 6034 accident, an increase of 7.35%.

Regionally, several areas showed decreases in terms of number of fatalities, including the regions of Chaouia-Ourdigha (10 killed), Souss-Massa-Draa (least 9 killed), Laâyoune-Boujdour (least 6 dead) , Taza-Al-Houceïma Taounate (least 6 killed), Tangier-Tetouan (minus 3 killed), Guelmim-Smara (dead less), Gharb-Chrarda Bni Hssein (dead less) and Casablanca (one death less).

For their part, the region of Tadla-Azilal Doukkala-Abda have stagnated during the month of September with 19 and 25 killed.
However, six regions have experienced significant increases in deaths compared to September 2008. The Oriental region recorded an increase of 9.68% and the region of Fez-Boulmane 18.75%. In the Oued Ed-Dahab Lagouira, the percentage of victims has risen by 300% while in the region of Meknes Tafilalet, the death toll jumped more than 25%. The Rabat-Salé-Zemmour-Zaër has increased by 40.91% as Marrakech Tensift Al Haouz where the number of deaths rose 88% last September.

Nine Months
At the national level, apart from a decrease in the number of serious injuries (9,080 victims, a decrease of 2.89%), other indicators showed significant increases during the first nine months of the year. A simple comparison with the statistics during the same period in 2008 show an increase of 5.85% in the number of dead victims with 2912 to September 2009. The number of minor injuries has also increased by 22.58% with 67,429 injured while accidents have increased by 17.60% to 51,134 casualties.

Regionally, only five of the 16 regions of Morocco have experienced declines in the number of deaths during the first three quarters of 2009, including Taza-Al-Houceima Taounate (least 16 killed, a decrease of 12.80 %), Meknes-Tafilalet (least 12 killed, down 6.70%), Tangier-Tetouan (less than 10 deaths, a decrease of 5.43%), Casablanca (less than 10 deaths, a decrease of 3.60%) and finally the region of Gharb Chrarda-Bni Hssein (least 8 killed, a decrease of 4.30%). For its part, Guelmim-Smara region has stagnated at 48 dead.

Other regions of Morocco have all without exception experienced increases in the number of dead. This is the region of Rabat-Salé-Zemmour-Zaër experienced the largest increase with over 63 more deaths, an increase of 34.43%. Fez Boulmane ranked second with 20 additional deaths, an increase of 18.87%. Souss Massa Draa its part has recorded 42 more fatalities compared to last year, an increase of 16.03%. The balance of Oued Ed-Dahab-Lagouira also jumped more than 14.29%. Doukkala Abda regions, the Oriental and Shuya-Ourdigha also saw increases of 10.50%, respectively, 8.98% and 8.41%. Finally, Tadla-Azilal, Marrakech-Tensift-Al Haouz and Laâyoune-Boujdour the least experienced sharp increases respectively 5.88%, 5.21% and 2.70%.

If the numbers of victims and accidents continue to increase, the annual death toll could also increase … unfortunately.

Causes
Depending on the services of the Directorate General of National Security, the majority of accidents are mainly due to inadequate control of vehicles, pedestrians inadvertently, to speeding, failure to observe the Highway Code, traffic signals, the stop sign, traffic on the left lane and in the wrong direction, driving while intoxicated and unauthorized overrun.

These are many causes that lead each year thousands of lives transformed by the same token Moroccan roads into true battlegrounds. As a reminder, no fewer than 4,162 people died in traffic accidents during 2008 in 64,715 accidents, according to statistics from the Ministry of Equipment and Transport. The number of victims in open country, continues to be largest with some 18,555 accidents and 2,935 fatalities in 2008
