Teenage girl killed in quarry accident

A 13-year-old girl has died after a rock struck her on the head when she fell in a quarry, an ambulance service said.
It is believed the girl, who has not been named, was playing with a group of friends in the quarry off Cemetery Road in Grimethorpe, Barnsley, when the incident happened.

A Yorkshire Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “We were called at 8.44pm last night to reports of a 13-year-old girl who had fallen and been hit on the head with a rock.”

The service sent two rapid response vehicles and an ambulance and the girl was found under a boulder in a ravine area.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said they were investigating the death. A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “The inquiry is in its early stages but it’s understood that the girl had been playing with a group of friends.
“Police are not treating the girl’s death as suspicious at this stage and will be liaising with the Health and Safety Executive.”
