Safety & Injuries

Safety & InjuriesSafety and injury represents a public health problem that has the greatest impact on the lives of Canadians. It is the leading case of death in children and adolescents and hospitalizations in children, adolescents and seniors. And overall Canadian population, the injury is the major cause of disability of short and long term.
What is a wound?

An injury is physical damage that occurs when the body is called upon to provide doses of energy beyond its capacity or when deprived of a vital element, such as air, water or heat.

An injury may be intentional or accidental.

* The injury is intentionally self-inflicted (suicide, self harm) or imposed on others (family violence, violence against children, assault, murder).
* The accidental injury is simply not intentional – it is the result of motor vehicle crashes, falls, fires and poisoning.

The difference between the diseases and injuries is that they occur very suddenly. Someone is doing well and in a few seconds, it can be injured, disabled or fatally injured. Injuries are considered “accidents”, a term which is misleading because it suggests that nothing could be done. But in fact, injuries are preventable.
Health Canada’s Role

Health Canada works with partners across Canada, such as the Public Health Agency of Canada, public health units, hospitals, educational institutions, the law enforcement, nongovernmental organizations and volunteers dedicated to promoting safety and injury prevention. Health Canada is involved in several activities related to promoting safety and injury prevention, such as:

* Product Safety – under the jurisdiction of the link will take you to another website Hazardous Products Act;
* Information and messages to inform and educate the public;
* Injury prevention programs designed for population groups at highest risk (children, First Nations and Inuit elders).

When an injury occurs, is usually the health care system that supports treatment and rehabilitation. But safety and injury prevention within each citizen, whether at home, at work, on roads, playgrounds and sports facilities, as well as in natural environments.
